Cuvée Ray is the relaxed upscale wine bar and restaurant in downtown Rehoboth that celebrates wines from around the world, great music, and inspired food. “Derived from the French, “Cuvée” is defined as a special blend of wine. I decided on the name Cuvée Ray to convey my desire for our Wine Bar & Restaurant to be known for its special blend of awesome wine, great music and inspired food. I also wanted Cuvée Ray to be an upscale—but relaxed—place where we can share some of the greatest, most exciting wines from around the globe with as many people as possible. Ray was born in Queens NY, and attended school in Westchester County, and graduated from George Washington University in 1981 with a Law Degree, and enjoyed a successful career as an attorney.
Recently retired, Ray and his wife Debbie decided to move Coastal Delaware full time. A place where they had spent much time throughout the years at their second home in Bethany, they always felt more at home in Coastal Delaware than at their primary residence in DC.
Ray’s journey into the wine world started in 1984 when he decided to take a wine course at American University. This would spark a passion that would inspire travel to wine regions across the country, in Europe, and most recently in Australia and New Zealand. Over the years, Ray has hosted countless wine tastings with friends, and Ray actually invented a wine/music experience he calls Vintunes, where participants match wines with musical selections.
After much research and contemplation, Ray and his wife Deb decided to take their passion for music and wine and incorporate it into a restaurant concept in downtown Rehoboth, where they found the perfect location to pursue their dream.
Ray is a Certified Sommelier by the U. S. Sommelier Association, and has also passed the first level exam given by the Court of Master Sommeliers. He is also a member of the Society of Wine Educators.

Joe Churchman was born in Abington, PA, but grew up in Rehoboth Beach. He is a graduate of Cape Henlopen High School and attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia where he studied film, special effects, web design and coding.
His culinary career started when he was 15, working in local Rehoboth restaurants, where he began to learn his craft. After studying at the University of the Arts, Joe returned to Rehoboth, and to the business he loved.
His experience in local restaurants include many years at Eden and Jam in Rehoboth, and Le Virtu in Philadelphia working under owners Cathy Lee and Francis Cratil. In 2014 he opened Bramble and Brine in downtown Rehoboth, which was very well received.
Joe lives in Rehoboth with his fiancée Jessica and his son Zev.
Rob Bagley was born in Maryland and moved to the Delaware Beach as a young teen and graduated from Cape Henlopen High School. His first job in the service industry was as a fountain worker at the local Friendly’s. He loved this job, creating sundaes and even won the regional Ice Cream Olympics competition.
His formative experience as a barman was under Chef Joe Churchman, who encouraged him to explore his craft and gave him full access to a gourmet kitchen to create syrups, infusions, bitters, purees and mixes. During this time, Rob spent all of his free time studying the art of cocktail creation. He read every book on cocktail creation that he could get his hands on. Rob, along with Joe, would learn to create new and bold flavor combinations, and then work to create a more refined Cocktail.
For Cuvée Ray’s Wine Bar and Restaurant, Rob was hired to design the cocktail program, help setup and open the bar, and be the bar manager upon opening. Rob crafted the cocktail menu at Cuvée Ray around the fact that Cuvée Ray is primarily a wine bar and restaurant. He wanted wine to be woven into the cocktail list in new and inspired ways using wine based aperitifs, vermouths, amaros, grape derived Spirits, and wine barrel aged spirits from like bourbons and gins to create original cocktails and put a twist on the classics. The result is an exciting cocktail list unique to Cuvée Ray.
Deb Kurz was born in Detroit, Michigan and grew up primarily in Virginia. She is a graduate of James Madison University and spent her early career as a legal secretary. After marrying Ray and having two children Deb decided to leave her career to be a stay at home mom.

Chris was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. His family relocated to Sussex County in 2000, and Chris attended high school at Sussex Tech.
His first restaurant job was at the Cottage Cafe in Bethany Beach where he worked summers and part time throughout high school where he created life long friendships. After high school he attended and graduated from Wyoming Technical Institute. He would return home and return to work at the Cottage Cafe as a Bartender.
Chris moved to Wilmington and while pursuing a degree in Exercise Science, he took a part time job with the Platinum Dining group. It was his time working at both Capers and Lemons and Eclipse Bistro that Chris discovered his passion for Wine and Hospitality. He would finish up his degree in exercise science, but knew his future was in the restaurant industry.
After receiving his degree, he moved back to Ocean View to be near his mother and grandmother, and was part of the opening team at Bethany Boathouse, owned by his previous employers from the Cottage Cafe. When the Boathouse closed for the season, Chris took a bartending position at Catch 54. It was under the guidance and encouragement of SoDel and specifically SoDel Wine Director Mike Zygmonski that Chris took on the challenge of passing the Level 1 Sommelier Test.
Chris would continue to grow as a Sommelier, hosting educational wine lunches at Catch and becoming the on site expert for the ever expanding wine program. In 2018 he accepted the position as General Manager to Cuvée Ray, where he plans on furthering his own wine education under the guidance of owner Ray Kurz.
Chris lives in Ocean View, Delaware. In his spare time Chris trains for endurance events. He has competed in the Ironman Triathlon, the JFK 50 mile Ultrarun, and the Lewes to Cape May Paddle Race.
